Podcast Hosts Take Action After BCCI Notice
"The Grade Cricketer," a well-known podcast led by Sam Perry and Ian Higgins, has removed all videos related to the Indian Premier League (IPL) from their social media platforms, including YouTube. This decision came after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a courteous notice regarding a breach of their code of conduct. The specific show in question was titled "The Big IPL Breakfast." Following the deletion of these videos, there was considerable discussion, prompting Perry to clarify that the removal was a voluntary action taken by them after receiving the notice.
Clarification from Sam Perry
During a recent podcast episode, Perry stated,
. He further explained,"You may have noticed that every single video from our coverage of this year's cricket tournament has been removed from YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Facebook, Instagram and X.
."This is something we've done ourselves; it hasn't been done to us. We received a very polite legal letter about elements of our content from the cricket tournament we speak to you about pertaining specifically to this season. As a result, we decided to take those videos down."
Future Plans for Coverage
Perry reassured fans that they remain committed to covering the tournament. They plan to travel to India for a live show and are excited to produce more content related to the IPL. He mentioned,
."It's very important to note we're going to continue to post coverage of the tournament, at the same cadence that we do. In fact, there's going to be more in the next couple of weeks because we're going to India. But our approach to content has been consistent for five years; we just now have a deeper understanding of what is and isn't passing muster."
BCCI's Restrictions Explained
The BCCI has made it clear that any still images, videos, or audio clips shared with media outlets are intended solely for editorial use and not for commercial purposes. This restriction prohibits posting such content on social media platforms, including YouTube. According to an IPL statement,
. Reports from the Sydney Herald indicate that the legal notice sent to "The Grade Cricketer" was related to the publication of editorial photos on commercial platforms. In response, the podcast hosts have decided to rename their segment from "The Big IPL Breakfast" to "Big Cricket Tournament Breakfast.""Media are allowed to use the press conference video/audio on their respective websites or mobile applications for editorial use. The press conference video/audio cannot be uploaded on social media platforms including but not limited to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter)."
